Who is Shibu Soren? A Complete Introduction

Shibu Soren [ Born: 11 January 1944 Death: 04 August 2025 ] often referred to as “Guruji” and “Disom Guru” was one of the most important influential figures in Indian tribal especially in Jharkhand. Guruji was among the pioneer, who fought for the rights of tribals. He played key role in the partition of Jharkhand from the Bihar. He cofounded and was a longtime president of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and also served as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for three terms.

Shibu Soren Biography: Early Life, Birthplace, Age & Background

Born in 11 January 1944, in a small village called Nemra in Ramgarh District. Soren belonged to the Santhal Tribal Community. He spent his early years studying in his village before completing Class 10 at Gola High School in Hazaribagh. Growing up, he often saw how poor tribal families were trapped in the cycle of exploitation by landlords and moneylenders. His father was murdered during his childhood, forcing him to leave school and work as a wood trader.

Political Journey: From Tribal Activist to Jharkhand CM

Years after his father was murder, at the age of just 18, in 1962 he founded the Santhal Navyuvak Sangh to unite the tribal youth and work for social reforms. He entered politics in the early 1970s, focusing majorly on reclaiming tribal lands from outside control and quickly emerged as a prominent tribal leader. However, his career was often clouded by allegations of violence, including involvement in clashes during the mid-1970s, which led to multiple legal cases.

In 1973, Soren co-founded the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) to demand a separate Jharkhand state, a goal that was realized in 2000. By mobilizing industrial workers, miners, and tribal communities, he expanded the party’s influence and became JMM president in 1987.

Shibu Soren was elected to the Lok Sabha from Dumka a total of seven times—first in 1980, then repeatedly from 1989 to 1998, and later again between 2002 and 2019. After his long career in the lower house, he moved to the Rajya Sabha in June 2020, where he served until his passing in 2025.

Shibu Soren became the Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times during his political journey.

  • First term: 2 March 2005 – 12 March 2005 (10 days)
  • Second term: 27 December 2009 – 31 May 2010
  • Third term: 30 December 2009 – 31 May 2010 (This is actually the same as the second term; he only officially held the position twice for significant periods)
    His longest tenure was from December 2009 to May 2010.

He also served as the Union Minister of Coal in the UPA government from 2004 to 2006.

Shibu Soren was married to Roopa Kisku and had four children: three sons—Durga Soren, Hemant Soren, and Basant Soren—and a daughter, Anjali Soren. Among them, Hemant Soren is the most prominent, currently serving as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, a position he also held earlier from 2013 to 2014. Durga Soren, the eldest son, was an MLA from Jama, while Basant Soren, the youngest son, is the current MLA from Dumka.

Shibu Soren’s Last Journey

Shibu Soren passed away on 4 August 2025 at the age of 81 at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in Delhi. He had been battling kidney-related complications for over a month and spent his final days on ventilator support.

The news of his passing was confirmed by his son, Hemant Soren, the current Chief Minister of Jharkhand, through a social media post. Politician from across the country expressed their sorrow at his passing, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paying tribute to him. To honor his memory and contributions, the Jharkhand government declared three days of state mourning.
